Kirstie Hettinga joined the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ faculty in 2013. She earned her doctorate in mass communication from Penn State and her bachelor's and master's degrees from California State University, Fresno. Dr. Hettinga teaches courses in journalism and serves as the faculty adviser to the student newspaper, . Her research addresses news media and issues regarding transparency and accountability. She also does research about student media as experiential learning.
Her research was recognized with university-wide Provost Distinguished Scholar Award in 2021 and the College of Arts & Sciences' Dean's Award for Scholarship/Creative Work in 2025. Her teaching was honored with the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ College of Arts & Sciences' Dean's Award for Innovation in Pedagogy in 2023. In 2021, she and Dr. Sheridan Wigginton of Languages and Cultures were recognized with the College of Arts & Sciences' Dean's Award for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for their work in launching the interdisciplinary Spanish media minor.
